  Burton Street Foundation, The - Day Activities


The Burton Street Foundation seeks to contribute to the local community by supporting people, activity and enterprise. It provides creative or work-based activities for people with learning disabilities, older people, people with physical impairments and/or sensory impairments and people with mental health issues.

Services Provided:

• Outreach Services
An individualistic service providing adults with moderate to profound learning disabilities, physical impairments and/or sensory impairments with one to one support to access social activities within the community. Burton Street Foundation believe that choice is key and customers should choose the time, frequency and activity. They have a dedicated, well trained, experienced staff team to ensure that they match clients to staff members so that they are able to build friendships, share interests and gain trust. Some of the social activities include: cycling, swimming, bowling, disco's, walking and trips out.

• Out and About Holidays
Provides individuals with moderate to profound learning disabilities, physical impairments and/or sensory impairments with the support they need to go on holidays, short breaks and day trips out. Burton Street Foundation believe that choice is the key and that individuals views, wishes and needs are accommodated. Clients are involved in each step of the planning process where possible. The staff team are extremely dedicated, trained to a high level and experienced to be able to give support so that the client can enjoy the holiday of their dreams. Out and About Holidays follow the guidelines set by the Sheffield Learning Disability Partnership Board.

• Inside Out
This is a service dedicated to providing meaningful day activities for adults with moderate to severe learning disabilities. The focus on all activities is creativity, enabling clients to grow in self confidence, self awareness and self esteem. Group sessions are available. Burton Street Foundation are committed to providing a high standard of care and have experience in working with clients who attend with complex needs (including mental health issues).

• React
Provides sessions in creative arts for adults with profound and complex learning disabilities and physical impairments including people with challenging behaviour and people on the autistic spectrum, to enable and improve communication and self expression. The project has been running as a Self Directed service for the past 10 years and is experienced in catering for individuals in receipt of Individual Budgets. Sessions are carefully developed to provide the right environment in which to enjoy person centred activities. The staff team are creative, well trained and motivated to provide high quality sessions at a personal, meaningful level.

• React Youth
Provides school holiday activities for children and young people with disabilities aged between 13 to 19 years. Offers a wide range of activities including trips to the coast, museums, parks plus many more interesting and stimulating pursuits. The service helps young people to form new friendships, build confidence and promote independence.

• Befriending
This is a service dedicated to providing a team of befrienders that will make planned visits to the elderly in their homes. Burton Street Foundation take the time to carefully match befrienders with clients to enable friendships to be formed, mutual respect and understanding of one another. Activities include: taking a stroll, visiting the library, shopping, gardening, correspondence, visiting the Burton Street allotment. Along with the one to one befriending service there is also group activity sessions. Activities include: exercise, bowls, cooking and trips out.

  Caroline North - Nordic Walking
Nordic walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking, making it twice as effective. It is a specific fitness technique and is not to be confused with trekking, hill walking or trail running. The use of poles means the upper body muscles are used as well as the legs. It is very effective at conditioning the abdominal muscles that provide core stability. It is one of the fastest growing fitness activities in the world because it is highly effective, affordable and above all fun.

Courses are located in Graves Park, Millhouses Park, Whirlowbrook Park and Chatsworth Park in the Peak District.



  Castle Mountaineering Club
Castle Mountaineering Club is a mountaineering and climbing club for adults only. Activities may also include walking, mountain biking, cycling and scrambling.


  Darnall Wellbeing
Darnall Wellbeing is a community organisation targeting anyone living in the Darnall and Tinsley area, working to engage individuals in a range of activities promoting health and wellbeing.

Offers a range of activities suitable for everyone, this includes: walks, tai chi, play (aged 8-13 years), chairobics (women only), and gym sessions (men only). Please note a small charge may apply for the sessions.

Social Prescribing is a service also run by Darnall Wellbeing which entails signposting to help people connect with local opportunities and make a positive change in their lives.

Stop Smoking support is also available providing a free, flexible, on to one service. With support you double your chances of giving up smoking.

The service also supports the Health Champions project, training local volunteers to provide a free, confidential one to one service to improve health and wellbeing such as managing diabetes, developing healthy eating habits and increasing exercise.

  De La Salle Association Rambling Club
Organises round walks 2 Sundays in the month in the Derbyshire Peak District. No dogs allowed. Walks of approximately 6-7 miles in length. New members welcome. Holds a Christmas dinner in December.


  Foothills - Free Guided Walks
Foothills manager and "Family Walks" author, Norman Taylor, leads walks on Wednesdays in the Peak District. Some walks are for beginners and some for more experienced walkers. Foothills will loan essential walking gear.


  Get Walking Keep Walking (Ramblers)
An urban walking project developed by the Ramblers (see separate entry) to increase regular independent walking among previously inactive or insufficiently active people in Sheffield.

Using the Get Walking Keep Walking website you can access short walking routes and local walking information for free. Perfect if you are new to walking for exercise or leisure.

  Good Companions Rambling Club
Organises Sunday walks of 9/10 miles or more. New members welcome. Organises coach rambles, weekend away and walks with a meal.


  H F Sheffield Group
Organises regular rambles on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Affiliated to H F Holidays Ltd. Holds occasional social events eg coach trips.


  Halcyon Rambling Club
Organises Sunday walks. Occasional weekends away in B&B or Youth Hostel Association accommodation. Affiliated to the Ramblers Association.

Has a Christmas lunch in January and club weekends away in May and September.



  Hallam Community and Youth Association
Provides a focal point for the community. Groups include keep fit for women, gardening, wine guild, drama and art group. Other groups include bridge, yoga, tai-chi, indoor bowling, rambling, badminton, choir, ballet, football and tennis.

Resources include meeting rooms, function room, bar and disco facility.

Walks arranged monthly on a Sunday, mainly in Derbyshire, about 8-12 miles in length.


  Hallam Community and Youth Association Walking Group
Organises Thursday short walks of 3-4 miles and longer walks of 6-8 miles. Caters for everyone.


  Health Walks in Sheffield
Part of Sheffield City Council. Holds 32 health walks at different locations across the city every week. The walks are of short duration, 30-60 minutes in Sheffield's parks, woodlands and green spaces. Walkers are accompanied by a minimum of two trained leaders, including a front and a back marker. Some walks may be suitable for wheelchairs and push chairs but please ring to check first.

Everyone walks within their own limitations. Everyone is welcome including all ages and levels of fitness. Sign language and guides for visually impaired people can be arranged. Self or any referral.



  Healthy Communities - Manor, Castle and Woodthorpe
A healthy living project provided by Manor and Castle Development Trust in partnership with NHS Sheffield. Aims to make being healthy easier.

The initiative comprises:

  Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre
Outdoor activity centre. Activities include camping, archery, obstacle courses, walking, canoeing, kayaking, orienteering, climbing wall, team building etc. Facilities are available to registered youth groups, churches, schools and charities etc. Indoor facilities available. Inspirations offers a bespoke person-centred service for individuals with learning disabilities who receive Direct Payments or an individual Budget.
The service is aimed at those who wish to lead a fulfilling life, pursuing activities and interests which they enjoy.

Inspirations will offer people a service which has a good work ethos around supporting people with a nurturing, holistic and consistent approach, ensuring that customers well-being is of the utmost priority and that the service is led by individuals choices and needs..

Inspirations focusses on enabling people to reach their goals and full potential through enjoying learning, sharing, accessing activities and interests which enrich peoples lives, promotes social inclusion through using local community facilities and aims to offer a variety of activities, specifically tailored to meet and exceed peoples expectations.

The service provided will include choice, creativity and flexibility. Opportunities may include rambling, gardening, baking, indoor sports, pet therapy, ballroom dancing, dog walking, arts & crafts and community involvement.

Qualifications/Experience and Quality Standards:

Inspirations is led by Susan Dimler who has over 21 years experience of working within Sheffield for the Joint Learning Disability Service. During this time she held a variety of roles within adult disability services, ranging from providing hands on support, to working with individuals with a diagnosis of dementia, autism, downs syndrome and Aspergers, to then being part of the day service management team, including managing supported living.

Susan has an NVQ3 in social care. Also has experience of working with older people and holds a qualification in dementia care mapping. Holds a current enhanced CRB. Holds public liability insurance. Can provide written references on request.

Lindley Educational Trust outdoor activity centre offers teambuilding, personal development and outdoor education. For schools, colleges, youth groups, teachers and youth workers.

Lockerbrook Farm Outdoor Activity Centre is owned by the Woodcraft Folk and which offers accommodation, environmental education and outdoor activities for resident and non resident groups.

Parnassus Mountaineering Club is a walking, camping and climbing club. New members must have previous climbing experience. Events include an Annual Dinner in December.


  Parson House Outdoor Pursuits Centre
Parson House Outdoor Activity Centre accommodates up to 30 people on a variety of courses: multi-activity, management training, specialist outdoor pursuit courses, including courses for people with disabilities and multi-activity events for children in the summer. Bed and breakfast is also offered.

  Peak Walking Group
The Peak Walking Group was formed in November 1999 and now has members from a wide area. It is run by a committee of 7 people who are elected annually at their AGM.

Peak Walking Group are a friendly group and provide enjoyable walks for adults of all ages. Children (aged 18 years and under) are welcome provided they are capable of the distances and are accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Walks are held on Sundays in the Peak National Park and occasionally in surrounding areas.



  Ramblers Association Sheffield Group
Local group of a national organisation that organises walks on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with occasional walks on Saturday. Holds a festival of Christmas walks in December and regular coach rambles throughout the year.

Also encourages the enjoyment of walking at all levels. Runs a Walking Out project twice a month with shorter length walks.

  Red Rope Socialist Walking and Climbing Club, Sheffield
Socialist club for walkers, mountaineers and rock climbers. Organises day, weekend and week-long trips to mountains and the countryside. Strives to be non-sexist, non-racist and non-elitist. Membership rates and trip costs based on ability to pay.

Meets at the steps at City Hall, S1 for fortnightly Sunday walks and climbs on an informal basis.



  Rock Lea Activity Centre
Outdoor activity centre which offers activity events for groups of adults of all abilities: potholing, caving, climbing, mountain biking, gorge walking, bog trotting, orienteering, abseiling and team building exercises.

Specialise in tailored bespoke group events for corporate parties, stag and hen parties and socials. Sessions are held at Station Road, Hathersage, S32.



  Shebeen
Shebeen is an environmental charity working in close partnership with other environmental organisations and diverse groups which include disadvantaged people, people with mental health problems, asylum seekers etc.

  Sheffield 40s Walking Group
A walking group affiliated to the Ramblers Association aimed at people in and around their 40s. The club organises walks on Saturdays and Sundays each week as well as many social opportunities and fun walking weekends away.

New members are welcome to join the group for a couple of walks to see how they like it after which they will be asked to join The Ramblers (stating that they want to be a member of Sheffield 40s walking group).

It costs £31 a year for individuals or £41 joint membership for all the free walks you can do (these prices are provided by Sheffield 40s Walking Group, please check them yourself for accuracy).



  Sheffield Campaign for Access to Moorland (SCAM)
SCAM campaigns for public access to moorland and open country. Oganises rambles, publicity events, and public meetings which are held at the Quaker Meeting House, S1.


  Sheffield CHA Rambling Club
Organises walks on Thursday and Saturday.


  Sheffield Clarion Ramblers
Affiliated to the Ramblers Association. Various walks on Sundays throughout the year. Uses public transport to reach the start, walks are approx 9-12 miles. Organises occasional car rambles. Holds a pie and pea supper in October/November. New members are always welcome.


  Sheffield Co-operative Party Rambling Club
Organises weekly rambles, usually on Sundays, approx 8/9 miles. Walks in the Peak District and South Yorkshire using public transport.


  Sheffield Hiking Dykes
Lesbian walking group. Walking mainly in the Peak District but also occasional walks in South Yorkshire and Staffordshire. Occasional weekends away. Shorter evening walks in summer followed by a pub meal. Events include Summer social and a Christmas or New Year social.


  Sheffield Local Access Forum
Sheffield Local Access Forum is a statutory body concerned with the provision of access to the countryside. It is made up of representatives from stakeholder groups including those representing rambling, horse-riding, land-owning interests, etc. Information can be found on the website.


  Sheffield Shamblers Walking Group
Sheffield Shamblers are a friendly, welcoming group for people of all ages and from every walk of life who enjoy walking and love having a good time. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times.

Offers weekly Sunday walks all year round which are usually around 7-9 miles in length with the occasional longer walk. Every other Saturday the walks are either short themed walks or walks of around 6 miles in length. Fortnightly midweek evening walks are also provided for people who fancy a brisk walk somewhere in the suburbs of Sheffield followed by a pub visit afterwards. These walks are normally 3-5 miles in length and last around 1.5 hours.

The group have regular stops to admire the views, the flora, fauna, birds and other wildlife. Sharing local information and any general knowledge about the countryside.

Weekend walks are normally around South Yorkshire and the Peak District. Walking speed is usually about 3 miles per hour and they walk as a social group waiting until the slowest person has caught up to make sure that they are safe.

The group have recently introduced weekly Wednesday daytime health walks based in Chapeltown which are designed for people who have never walked or someone recovering from an operation or long-term illness for example. Through these walks people can progress through different walking stages enabling them to eventually do and enjoy longer walks.

Also recently introduced fortnightly Thursday daytime health walks which take place in and around areas of Sheffield, these walks are slightly longer than the Wednesday ones.

• Wednesday daytime health walks - 1hour walk to get your heart going
• Thursday daytime health walks - 2 hour walk to stretch those legs a little further
• Thursday evening walks - 1.5 to 2 hours to keep those legs moving
• Saturday daytime walks - 3-4 hours leading to the more challenging:
• Sunday daytime walks - 4-5 hours.

  Sheffield University of The Third Age
University of the Third Age is a worldwide organisation open to all people who are not in gainful employment and in which they can develop together their experience and skills, share them and seek out new interests. The object is learning and recreation for their own sakes, with no degrees or awards and no qualifications for entry. A registered charity.

  Sheffield Visually Impaired Walking Group
Sheffield Visually Impaired Walking Group is for visually impaired people. The group does two or more walks per month, length approximately 6/8 miles and two or more walks per month approx 4 miles, all accompanied by sighted guides. The group also holds social events and organises other activities such as tandem rides, motorcycle club, gliding and watersports and arranges walking holidays for the visually impaired.

Volunteer sighted guides always welcome.



  Sheffield Walking Group
Walking group for people in their 20s and 30s. Also organises weekends away to areas such as the Lake District, Snowdonia and the Yorkshire Dales. Varied and active social calendar.

Walks every Saturday and Sunday with evening walks from April to September.

  Sheffield Wanderers Walking Group
Sheffield Wanderers Walking Group is a non-profit making organisation which arranges organised walks in the Sheffield area and the Peak District. Every Sunday they offer a walk of around 8-10 miles and also occasional midweek walks and summer evening walks.

The group are an internet based organisation so access to a computer is essential if you want to join them on one of their walks. For more details visit their website.



  Step Up Support
Step Up Support is a service for adults with learning disabilities who are working towards living independently.

Services Provided:

• Overnight short breaks (respite) in Step Up's own accommodation, staffed 24 hours a day
• Offers community learning activities focused around lifeskills including budgeting, shopping, cooking and leisure activities such as gardening and walking. Sessions run from Monday-Friday and can be attended for a morning, an afternoon or a whole day.

Prices:

• Sunday-Thursday overnight stays are £150 per night (4pm-10am)
• Friday & Saturday overnight stays are £170 per night (4pm-10am)
• 2 hour community learning sessions are £25
• full day community learning sessions are £50 (including lunch)
• weekend full day is £70 (including lunch)
• hourly rate for extra support is £15 per hour

Qualifications and Quality Standards:

Step Up Support is a social enterprise governed by a board of directors. It is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to ensure a quality service is provided. The managers of Step Up Support are both qualified social workers and all staff are enhanced CRB checked.

  Strollers and Striders
Leisurely walks for single people once a fortnight on alternate Saturdays (Strollers). Occasional longer walks for single people (Striders).

Arranges day trips, 2 weekend trips away, a Christmas meal and other social events. Affiliated to the Ramblers Association.



  Walking Out in Sheffield
Walking Out in Sheffield are guided walks which run throughout 2013. The walks are free, open to everyone and sponsored by Sheffield Ramblers. Walks are graded as easy going, stroller and strider. A leader and backmarker take you to the start of the walk by public transport (at your own expense) and guide you through Sheffield's parks, woods, green spaces, rivers and countryside, sometimes in the company of experts in a particular field or to visit somewhere not normally open to the public.

Walks are advertised in the Sheffield Telegraph, on the Sheffield Forum, Environment Weeks and the BBC 'Things to Do' websites. The full itinerary in leaflet form is available from libraries and tourist information and on-line at www.sheffield.gov.uk/walking and www.sheffieldramblers.org.

  Wednesday Rambling Group, The
A walking group for retired men. Arranges A & B walks, longer and shorter walks for differing abilities and C walks for the physically less able (approx 5/6 miles).

Organises coach rambles 3 times per year. Holds Christmas lunch in December. The walks are listed in "Rambling Diary" on Wednesdays in the Sheffield Star.



  Wednesday Wayfarers and Monday Happy Wanderers
Explores the countryside around Sheffield, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Nottinghamshire. Walks are usually about 8 miles. Car sharing. Bring a packed lunch, walking boots and waterproofs. Mixed group with most people being over 50 years of age, well behaved dogs welcome.

Has close association with Penistone Walkers. Organises a coach trip every month during the summer months. Affiliated to the Ramblers Association.



  Wisewood Sports Centre
Has facilities which include a state of the art techno gym, sports hall, dance studio and seminar room. Gym membership is available together with a comprehensive programme of activities, including exercise classes and a range of sports club activities, including health walks and Under 5's activities.

From June 2013 there will be a new artificial grass floodlit pitch. For further information and a full programme of activities, please visit their website.

  Women Only Walks
Aims to encourage women of all ages and abilities to participate in countryside walks and bike rides and have a go at practical tasks in a friendly and safe environment.

Regular programme of morning strolls to full day rambles. Organised by the Dore Village Society.
